The resolution of the Council of Ministers approving the National Anti-Corruption Strategy 2020-2024 (ENAC) was published in the Official Gazette on 6 April. It is available online here.

ENAC's priorities are: 1) Improve knowledge, training and institutional practices on transparency and integrity; 2) Preventing and detecting corruption risks in public action; 3) Commit the private sector to preventing, detecting and prosecuting corruption; 4) Strengthen the articulation between public and private institutions; 5) Ensure a more effective and uniform application of legal mechanisms for the repression of corruption, improve the response times of the judicial system and ensure the adequacy and effectiveness of punishment.

In Portugal, in 2020, the number of investigations initiated regarding the crime of corruption was 688, lower than in 2019, with 890 cases initiated, according to the recently released Annual Internal Security Report.

In the same document, the investigation of economic and financial crime resulted in the constitution of a total of 599 defendants.

The first version of the approved Strategy was subject to public consultation until 20 October 2020, which resulted in important contributions from individual citizens, civic associations, professional associations, trade union and business associations, magistrates and lawyers.

The Strategy was also at the centre of debates and conferences. Consolidated the document is approved by the Government its final version for submission to the Assembly of the Republic of its legislative proposals.
