Santa Casa distinguishes personalities for their work with the elderly population
The winners of the 2021 Nunes Correa Verdades de Faria Awards are already known. These awards distinguish personalities who, in Portugal, stood out for their contribution in the three areas defined, in will, by the meritorious Mantero Belard.
On Tuesday, July 6, the Commission announced the winners of this year's Nunes Correa Truths of Faria Awards. Through these awards are distinguished personalities, of any nationality, for the contribution, work or studies developed, in Portugal, in three areas: care for the unprotected elderly, progress of medicine applied to the elderly and treatment of heart disease. The jury also awarded three honorable mentions.
In addition to the express will to award these prizes annually, in the amount of 12,500 euros each, Enrique Mantero Belard also left to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, the Faria Mantero residence, to be used as a home or nursing home for elderly, meritorious and needy people.
Meet the winners of the 2021 edition Leonel Francisco Franco, Vice-President of the São José Home – Social Solidarity Foundation in Torres Vedras, was awarded in Area A, “Care and Care Dispensated to the Unprotected Elderly”. First as a volunteer and then, in 1994, as a member of the social bodies of the household, Leonel Francisco Franco devoted his whole life to social causes, especially among the older population. This distinction reflects the public recognition of the merit and dedication demonstrated throughout his career.
In area B, “Progress of Medicine in its Application to the Elderly”, the distinguished person was Ângela Sofia Lopes Simões, a specialist in Medical-Surgical Nursing and in Palliative Nursing. In 2017, he developed the thesis ‘The Promotion and Preservation of Dignity in the context of care in Elderly Homes’, which was subsequently published in several scientific journals.
Maria Júlia Pires Maciel Barbosa received the prize in area C, “Progress in the Treatment of Heart Diseases”. Head of Cardiology service and retired assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, is also responsible for the organization of Cardiology Days. With a remarkable hospital and academic career, he specializes in Cardiology and Paediatric Cardiology. This distinction reflects their important and recognised contribution in particular to improving the treatment of heart disease.
Honorable mentions The three honorable mentions were, this year, awarded in areas A and C.
In area A, ‘Care and Care Dispensated for the Unprotected Elderly’, the jury distinguished Rute Sónia Loureiro de Moura, founder of the Peña Mourisca Ecological and Cultural Association, for her work with the senior population of the municipality of Bragança and her contribution to healthy ageing and the promotion of the health and well-being of this public.
In area B, “Medicine Process in its Application to the Elderly”, the honourable mention was attributed to Rui André Quadros Bebiano da Providência e Costa, professor at the University College of London, for his dedication and research path in the treatment of coronary heart disease, heart failure and atrial fibrillation.
Also in this area, the jury decided to honor Sílvia Martins Ribeiro, graduated in Medicine with a specialty in Cardiology, for the commitment shown, especially in the area of Arrhythmology.
